PROJECT IN FIRST CYCLE OF PRIMARY: COLOUR CHANGING FLOWERS

Students in 1st graders made this experiment. This experiment demonstrates the structure of plants and how they draw water from the ground into the leaves and flowers. It was pretty! You can try. You need:

1. Fill the vase with water, and add the food colouring.

2. Trim the flower stem and place it in the vase. I put a stick of celery in each vase too.

3. Check back every few hours. Between 6 to 12 hours later, then plant should have draw then coloured water up the stem, and the white flower should now be the colour of the food dye.

4. You can now remove the flower from the vase, and get an adult to cut the stem and look at the cross section. You should see vein-like tubes filled with coloured liquid. This will be especially noticeable with the celery.
